Medication
(Semaglutides such as Wegovy and Ozempic)
How we incorporate them into Constant Health

Whether you already have a prescription or need us to prescribe one for you, medication is completely optional when you’re working with Constant Health.

But we're going to start here, because it's on everyone's mind.

‍If you’ve struggled with weight, you’ve probably noticed that you may react differently (physiologically speaking) than those who don’t.

Others seem to be less hungry all the time, or feel fuller after eating

One reason may have to do with your body’s hormonal response to food.

When you eat, your body releases a suboptimal amount of a hormone called glucagon-like-peptide-1 (or GLP-1 for short).

GLP-1 attaches to a receptor in the appetite control centre of your brain, decreasing hunger, and cravings, and makes you feel full faster.

The new medications we’re using in weight management mimic GLP-1 (eg semaglutide aka ozempic) and for many they’re a game changer, especially if they’re prescribed and monitored by experts.

If they’re not prescribed carefully, there’s a higher risk of side effects, which at times can be severe enough to lead people to stop taking the medication altogether.

Also, without any sort of behaviour modification, they may well not lead to nearly as much weight loss as a person hopes.

In fact, for many who have never tried a well-designed program focused on behavioural change, Constant Health has been a game changer, even without the use of medication, but sometimes our bodies challenge even the best designed programs.

For those people, the addition of medication is often the key that had been missing for long term success and where they thought they just weren’t trying hard enough.

In fact they simply were swimming against physiology that these new medications were able to correct.

Best of the best Registered Dietitians
(RDs)

Our Registered Dietitians (RDs) are some of the best in Canada. In fact, Constant Health was created by a team that had already run one of Canada’s most comprehensive weight clinics for decades, focusing on pediatric, pre and post surgical care, and adult behavioural weight management.

We only hire the best of the best. Really, our acceptance rate for dietitians who interview with us (3%) is lower than the acceptance rate for Harvard Law School.

Becoming an RD is in Canada is difficult enough as it is. They need to:
  • Go to University for at least four years.
  • Study all relevant topics, from biochemistry to physiology to nutrition.
  • Pass both Provincial and National exams administered by a regulated licensing body.

When they apply to work at Constant Health, we rigorously filter for knowledge of weight management (because not every dietitian specializes in it) as well as their instincts around working and interacting with people.

After that, they receive year-round training in:
  • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) with our Clinical Psychologist in workshops 2x per month to support behaviour change.
  • Weekly peer supervision to learn best practices and from the entire clinic’s experience.
  • Monthly research journal and book clubs to keep current with the latest in nutrition and CBT, so they’re not limited by University nutrition textbooks (much of which is outdated).

Those who have always struggled with their weight are often concerned that they’re a hopeless cause because they’ve tried everything to lose weight. They often think they’re different.

But we can assure you that no matter your history, situation, or environment, our dietitians have seen your case hundreds of times over. They’re that experienced.

For those who choose to take medication, our RDs help you learn underlying habits and skills that will help you ensure you get the best possible outcome from the medication while teaching you the skills you would need even if it were to be stopped.

Furthermore, GLP-1s in the press are certainly notorious for their harsh side effects––something we almost never see.

That's because your dietitian also works with your prescriber to manage foods to help reduce or eliminate many of the side effects that cause people to discontinue GLP1’s.

One-of-a-kind app

Before building Constant Health, we looked at all of the weight loss apps out there and what they were missing.

The result is a best-in-class app that enhances all aspects of the program.

Some features include:
  • The ability to track your meals more easily than other apps out there. We use A.I. in order to allow you to simply speak what you ate, in plain English, and then translate it to actual foods.
  • Easy communication with your RD through messaging and video.
  • An easy way for RD’s to look at your progress, meals, and mood, between meetings so they can help analyze your behaviour or troubleshoot your progress.
  • The ability to create “experiments” with your RD, where you test new things and find out the impact on your program (e.g. what increasing protein does for your hunger and weight loss).
  • A vibrant community of other Constant Health users where you can exchange experiences and tips.
